Refreshing Your Photo Set: When and What to Change

6 min

Photographs age faster than expected. The signs it is time to change a set, and gradual replacement instead of a full redo.

A photo set feels like something permanent: take good frames and use them for years. In practice photographs age for several independent reasons, and some of them have nothing to do with your appearance changing.

Why photographs age

  • Appearance changes: hair, weight, age, style. Two years usually shows.
  • The visual context shifts: how photographs are taken and processed moves noticeably over a few years, and old frames betray their age stylistically.
  • Technical standards change: resolution, proportions, platform requirements.
  • Frames grow stale for you personally, which affects how you present them.

Signs it is time to change

  1. People say in person that you look different from your photos.
  2. You look at a frame and think "that was a while ago".
  3. Something noticeable changed: hairstyle, glasses, beard, hair colour.
  4. The photographs were taken in a season opposite to the current one.
  5. More than eighteen months have passed.

Gradual replacement

A complete refresh seems logical, but it has a drawback: you lose information about what was working. Replacing everything at once, you never learn which frames drew the response.

It is more practical to change one or two frames at a time and watch what shifts. After several iterations the set is fully renewed, but you understand which kinds of frames work for you.

What to change first

The priority is the opposite of the intuitive one. What gets replaced first is not the main photo but the least informative frames: those dated by context, those duplicating each other, those shot in an irrelevant season.

The main photo is changed cautiously: if it is working, a replacement may make things worse. It is sensible to promote a new main photo only after it has proved itself in second position.

Seasonality

An underrated factor. Winter frames in heavy clothing look odd in summer, and vice versa. It is not critical, but it creates a faint sense of an abandoned profile.

It is practical to keep frames from different seasons and move the relevant ones to the front as the year turns.

Accumulating material

The obstacle to updating is usually having nothing to put up: no recent frames, and no appetite for organising a shoot.

A working habit is to shoot a little, continuously. Ask a friend for a few frames on a walk, photograph yourself in good light at home, keep the good frames from events. Over a few months material accumulates and there is something to choose from.

Archive

Do not delete old photographs when replacing them. First, some may become useful again. Second, comparing an old set with a new one shows what changed in how you present yourself.

It is practical to keep a folder with the current set and one with the archive, dating each session. It takes a minute and eliminates the question "where is that good frame".

Frequently asked

How often should I update photographs?

Every year to eighteen months, sooner if your appearance changed noticeably. Besides appearance, shooting style and seasonality also date a set.

Replace the whole set at once or gradually?

Gradually, one or two frames at a time. A complete replacement loses the information about which frames were working.

What should I replace first?

The least informative frames: dated by context, duplicating each other, shot in an irrelevant season. Change the main photo cautiously, after testing it in second position.
