Video From Photos for Advertising: What to Settle Before Production

7 min

Commercial use adds requirements personal projects do not have: rights, disclosure, accuracy about the product, and predictability.

Generated video in advertising is already ordinary practice, especially in short formats. But transferring personal experience of generation to commercial work causes problems: where "it came out nicely" suffices privately, advertising brings requirements of a different kind.

Rights to source material

The first and most substantial point. Every image entering the pipeline must belong to you or be used with the rights holder's permission.

  • Photographs of employees — with their written consent to advertising use, not merely "they don't mind".
  • Photographs of models — under a contract that covers use in derivative materials.
  • Stock images — under a licence that permits modification. Not all licences do.
  • Product photographs — usually yours, but check who shot them and on what terms.

Accuracy about the product

Advertising must not mislead about a product's properties. Generated video breaches this easily and unintentionally: models flatter by default.

Practical risk zones: product colour, size relative to other objects, material texture, how mechanisms work, the result of using it. If a clip shows the product working, what it shows must correspond to reality.

A sensible split: generation for atmosphere and emotion, real footage for demonstrating properties.

Disclosure

Requirements for labelling generated content vary by platform and jurisdiction and are tightening. A number of platforms require such content to be marked at upload; some do it automatically from metadata.

A practical principle: if a viewer could take the clip for footage of a real event with real people, labelling is appropriate regardless of formal requirements.

Recognisable people

Using a real person's likeness in advertising requires their consent — and that is equally true of generated images. A resemblance produced by a model does not make the image rights-free.

A separate zone is celebrity-adjacent faces. Even when formally not a specific person, the association can create a problem if it is used for promotion.

Production predictability

A commercial project runs on deadlines, and generation behaves differently there than in personal work. Plan for:

  1. A run allowance: the result does not arrive on the first attempt, and that is the process rather than a failure.
  2. Time for selection and checking: every clip is inspected for artefacts and some are rejected.
  3. A fallback: what replaces the clip if generation does not deliver.
  4. Internal sign-off before production rather than after: reworking a clip costs as much as making it.

Consistency across a campaign

A campaign rarely consists of one clip. Coherence between materials is achieved the same way as in photography: a fixed part of the request, one source, one final grade.

Budget for grading all clips to one look — without it the set will look assembled from different sources.

What generation genuinely gives a business

Speed during exploration: assembling ten concept variants in a day instead of a week of shooting is a real advantage at the stage where the decision has not been made.

Volume in low-stakes tasks: background visuals, atmospheric inserts, variants for different platforms. Where filming is excessive in cost, generation covers the need.

What it does not replace

Product demonstration, footage with real people in real conditions, anything that has to prove a fact. That is not a technological limit but a consequence of advertising being answerable for its claims.

Frequently asked

Do I need employee consent to use their photos?

Yes, written consent specifically for advertising use. "They don't mind" is not sufficient for commercial material.

Can I show the product in a generated clip?

For atmosphere, yes; for demonstrating properties, no — models flatter by default, and advertising is answerable for colour, size and how the product works.

Should generated video be labelled?

Requirements vary by platform and are tightening. A practical principle: if a viewer could take it for footage of a real event, labelling is appropriate.
